Press Release
Reproductive Freedom for All Georgia celebrates the Georgia Legislature’s decision to pass House Bill 1138 and urges Governor Kemp to sign it into law. This legislation will drastically expand access to contraception by allowing pharmacists to directly dispense birth control pills and shots to patients 18 and older without a prescription.
Thirty-five other states have taken similar steps to reduce barriers to accessing contraception. Georgia could become one of them if Governor Kemp signs the bill into law, bridging a critical gap in health care access across the state.
Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Georgia Campaigns Alicia Stallworth released the following statement:
“Georgians are already facing the consequences of politicians interfering in our health care, from abortion bans to provider shortages, and we know that expanding access to birth control saves lives. We’re grateful to leaders in the House and Senate for passing this bill and for working to improve health care access in Georgia. Reproductive Freedom for All Georgia urges Governor Kemp to sign the bill into law. We will continue pushing until access to care is not determined by where you live in Georgia.”
Many rural parts of Georgia are facing severe gaps in care, with 75 counties lacking a single OB-GYN. These health care deserts, driven by years of restrictive policies and disinvestment, leave people with fewer options and delays for essential health care. Signing this bill into law will break down barriers to care and expand access through trusted, local providers.
