Yesterday, Reproductive Freedom for All endorsed Troy Jackson in his bid to unseat Senator Susan Collins in Maine—where reproductive freedom is at the center of one of the country’s most consequential Senate races this cycle.
Reproductive Freedom for All’s President and CEO, Mini Timmaraju, joined Jackson in Maine for the launch of the campaign’s ‘Women for Troy’ coalition, where more than 100 supporters rallied around the fight to elect a reproductive freedom champion to the U.S. Senate. Timmaraju praised Jackson’s evolution on abortion and his record of fighting to expand access, telling the crowd, “We are the majority in this state. We are the majority in this country.” Mainers are fired up to elect Jackson and send Susan Collins packing after she cast the decisive vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh, cementing the Court majority that overturned Roe v. Wade. This November, Senator Susan Collins faces Maine voters for the first time since the Dobbs decision.

One of the oldest abortion rights groups in the US is endorsing Troy Jackson, the Democratic nominee in Maine’s critical US Senate race, according to details first shared with the Guardian.

“Flipping the Maine Senate race is a critical path to winning a Senate majority, and we do not restore a federal right to abortion without flipping the Senate majority,” said Mini Timmaraju, the group’s president.

“[Jackson] in many ways reflects the reality of a majority of independents and Republicans in this country who now support abortion rights, but might personally have felt conflicted in the past,” Timmaraju told the Guardian. “Having someone like Troy in the Senate who can talk to his Republican colleagues and talk to some of those moderate Democratic colleagues who don’t have the same courage that he has is actually going to be a huge value add for our movement.”

“It’s really really important to watch policymakers and legislators meet the moment with their constituents. To me, it is the sign of a thoughtful, informed advocate. I think there’s actually something really special and important about Troy Jackson’s evolution, because he’s going to be able to connect with Independent voters and Republican voters who are frustrated with Susan Collins. He went through his own evolution. They’re going to connect with that.
Poll after poll, race after race, since Dobbs has shown that Independents and Republicans want to see government get out of this—out of restricting abortion care over and over again. We are seeing crossover support in every state, in every battleground where we have ballot measures in red states like Kansas and Missouri. Troy Jackson understands those voters. They’re going to resonate with his story.
I think that actually makes him a very powerful advocate — even more so than someone who claims to be pro-choice but guts our fundamental freedoms, like Susan Collins.”
