NARAL Pro-Choice America Denounces Senate Republicans for Blocking the Right to Contraception Act
Washington, DC — Today, anti-choice Republicans in the U.S. Senate blocked the Right to Contraception Act. This legislation would protect the right to contraception throughout the United States at a time when extremist lawmakers in multiple states are enforcing total bans on abortion after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Senate Republicans’ refusal to protect contraception access is beyond unacceptable. As our country grapples with the ripple effects of the Supreme Court ending the right to abortion, MAGA Republicans continue to find every excuse to exert power and control over us all. Contraception is a key way people can decide if, when, and how to start or grow a family, and these extremists are pulling back the curtain to reveal just how out of touch they are with Americans. Voters won’t forget it come November.”
Last month, the anti-choice supermajority on the Supreme Court overturned Roe. In a concurring opinion, Justice Clarence Thomas wrote that the Court should reconsider the Supreme Court precedent that guaranteed the right to contraception. Some anti-choice lawmakers have refused to rule out the possibility of banning some forms of contraception in their state even though the public overwhelmingly supports access to contraception. These lawmakers have peddled disinformation to make a case for their latest intrusion into Americans’ private lives. The people hurt most by these bans and restrictions are those who already face barriers to accessing abortion care—including women; Black, Indigenous, and other people of color; those working to make ends meet; the LGBTQ+ community; immigrants; young people; those living in rural communities; and people with disabilities.
For over 50 years, NARAL Pro-Choice America has fought to protect and advance reproductive freedom at the federal and state levels—including access to abortion care, birth control, pregnancy and post-partum care, and paid family leave—for every body. NARAL is powered by its 4 million members from every state and congressional district in the country, representing the 8 in 10 Americans who support legal abortion.
