Explaining CA Prop 50 and the Fight for Voting Rights

VOTING IS UNDERWAY

Prop 50 is a critical ballot measure in the California special election on November 4, 2025

⚡ TL; DR (too long, didn’t read)

If you care about reproductive freedom and fair elections, you need to know what’s on the ballot in California this November: Prop 50, also known as the Election Rigging Response Act (ERRA).

The context: Trump and GOP loyalists are gerrymandering Congressional districts in an unfair power grab. In Texas, they’ve decided to redraw the electoral map to skew elections in their favor.

In response, California Governor Gavin Newsom has led the charge on Prop 50 to fight against GOP lawmakers’ attempt to cheat the system.

Republicans think they’re above the rules of fair elections, but we won’t let them get away with it.

🔎 A Closer Look:  Texas, California, and Fair Elections Nationwide

Trump’s been pressuring his loyalists to protect the GOP’s razor-slim majority in the House of Representatives, including Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who caved to Trump’s demands.

He ordered the congressional maps to be redrawn in Texas, which will deliver five additional seats for Republicans in the 2026 midterm elections.

Ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, this call for gerrymandering is part of a larger trend of Trump and his allies attacking voting rights and democracy from every angle.

🤿 Dive Into the Details: What Exactly is Prop 50?

Prop 50 aims to neutralize Texas’ efforts by temporarily redrawing maps in California to recapture five seats in districts that favor Democratic candidates.

Doing so will balance out the GOP’s shameless power grab and stop them from trying to rig our democracy.

Prop 50 is already facing opposition from Republicans—including anti-abortion extremists—signaling that this is likely to be a highly contentious special election.

Charles Munger Jr., an anti-abortion mega donor who previously bankrolled a slew of conservative candidates and ballot measures in California, donated $10M to the opposition campaign.

⚠️  The Stakes: How this Bill Impacts All of Us Nationwide

The GOP knows they’ll lose control of the House in 2026 if they play fair and square—so they’re trying to cheat their way to a win.

When they don’t like the rules, they change them.

This ballot measure is crucial to holding Trump in check and fighting back against anti-abortion extremists over the next two years.

Moreover, this is about maintaining democracy and fairness in future elections and holding Republicans accountable for thinking they’re above the rules.

🛩️ The Big Picture: Fight Against the GOP’s Project 2025 Plan

Extremist Republican lawmakers have been chipping away at our reproductive freedom with the goal of banning abortion nationwide, and voter suppression is just one part of their plan to stay in power.
