We strongly oppose Gregory Cook, Trump's pick to serve on the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama

Cook currently serves as an Associate Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, a seat he won by election in 2022 after years of service as a Republican Party lawyer. He served as general counsel to the Alabama Republican Party from 2017 to 2021 and counsel to the Jefferson County Republican Party before that.
Cook campaigned for his seat on the Alabama Supreme Court on his opposition to reproductive freedom. In a local news interview, he characterized the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs as the Court “doing the right thing,” and pointed to Dobbs as evidence of “the importance of electing judicial conservatives.”
He has been a member of anti-reproductive freedom organizations, including the Federalist Society since 1989 and was a member of the Christian Legal Society from 2010 to 2022 (an organization that filed an amicus brief in Dobbs urging the Court to overrule precedent that protected the right to abortion, and actively opposes contraceptive access).
While campaigning for an Alabama Supreme Court seat, Cook publicized his anti-reproductive freedom views in a local news outlet. He characterized the Dobbs decision as the U.S. Supreme Court “doing the right thing.”
Additionally, Cook referred to the Dobbs decision as a pivotal moment during his campaign trail in highlighting “the importance of electing judicial conservatives to their state Supreme Court.”
Cook is a member of several organizations that work to advance anti-reproductive freedom agendas:
Cook has been a member of the Federalist Society since 1989. The Federalist Society is a well-funded, conservative legal network that exerts influence through law schools, professional networks, conferences, and over the judiciary at large. It serves as a talent and influence pipeline for the conservative movement to help cultivate young lawyers and pack the courts with judges who will execute their unpopular agenda—including efforts to undermine reproductive freedom.
Cook was a member of the Christian Legal Society from 2010 to 2022. The Christian Legal Society is an anti-abortion organization that filed an amicus brief in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, advocating for the overturning of Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. It actively opposes access to contraceptives and promotes harmful rhetoric regarding abortion care.
In his personal capacity, Cook has undermined fair elections and advocated for restrictive voting laws.
Trump has a deeply troubling track record of nominating judges who oppose reproductive freedom, reflecting the Trump administration’s vision for courts that are hostile to the basic reproductive rights and freedoms for all.
Decisions made by these judges will impact our health, access to care, and daily lives, and we deserve to know whether these nominees are committed to fairness and equality under the law or if they are beholden to an ideology or agenda opposing reproductive freedom.
Sign the petition in support of court reform efforts, including court expansion and investigations into ethics of justices, to restore the legitimacy of our judicial system.
It's going to take all of us to win back our freedom. Add your name today to commit to fighting for reproductive freedom.
