ICYMI: Mini Timmaraju Breaks Down Trump’s Attacks on Safety and Health Care Access With Katie Phang
Today, Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju joined Katie Phang to discuss the sweeping implications of the Trump Department of Justice (DOJ) firing four federal prosecutors involved in enforcing the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act earlier this week.
Timmaraju and Phang discussed how this move is not only dangerous—it is part of broader efforts to weaponize the DOJ against reproductive freedom by protecting anti-abortion extremists and targeting those who hold them accountable. The FACE Act was passed in 1994 with bipartisan support to prohibit the use or threat of force to intimidate, injure, or interfere with anyone seeking or providing reproductive health care, and this is not the first time Trump has tried to grossly misuse it to advance his own agenda.
In the first week of this administration, Trump ordered the DOJ to weaken enforcement of the FACE Act and pardoned people convicted under it—opening the door to harassment and violence against patients and providers. Since then, the DOJ has ordered a review of FACE Act prosecutions and dropped investigations, while also stretching the same law in unprecedented ways to go after journalists who were covering ICE protests in Minnesota.
Timmaraju and Phang also dove into new research that connects the dots between economic stability and access to reproductive health care, including abortion care, and underscores how closely these issues are linked for Americans. Having a child is the single biggest economic decision most people will make in their lifetime, and the survey found that people don’t make decisions about parenthood lightly: Almost 3-in-4 individuals (73%) say that their personal financial situation is a major factor when deciding to have a child.
For many families, financial stability has been pushed further out of reach by the GOP-manufactured health care crisis that has left millions without access to critical health care and forced them to make impossible decisions to keep themselves and their families afloat.
The bottom line is that health care access and safety are important to Americans—and Trump and his allies are chipping away at both through coordinated attacks from every angle. They are blatantly subverting the will of people across the country to push their unpopular policies, all while trying to rig the system to dodge accountability in the 2026 midterm elections.
Listen to Timmaraju and Phang break these attacks down here.
