Reproductive Freedom for All Celebrates as Dr. Amish Shah Flips Arizona’s 1st Congressional District

Washington, DC — Reproductive Freedom for All-endorsed candidate Dr. Amish Shah became the first Indian American to represent Arizona in Congress, defeating Trump-backed Republican Jay Feely and flipping Arizona’s 1st Congressional District.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“Dr. Amish Shah has spent two decades in Arizona emergency rooms, and he knows decisions about accessing abortion care belong with patients and their doctors. Our more than 100,000 Arizona members worked to elect him and bring his fight for reproductive freedom to Congress.”

Reproductive Freedom for All endorsed Shah in August, when Mini Timmaraju joined him in Phoenix as part of our My Body. My Ballot. campaign, the organization’s $23.5 million campaign and largest-ever midterm electoral program. To help secure this critical victory, Reproductive Freedom for All mobilized its more than 100,000 members in the state and spent nearly a million dollars, including a six-figure paid canvassing program and nearly $450,000 in mail and digital ads in the district to highlight Jay Feely’s extreme anti-abortion record. Timmaraju also joined Shah for a canvass launch as part of the organization’s October sprint to connect directly with voters in the final stretch before Election Day.

Shah served in the Arizona House from 2019 to 2024 and still works shifts in the district as an emergency room physician. He cosponsored legislation to repeal Arizona’s 1864 near-total abortion ban and the Right to Contraception Act, and he personally collected hundreds of signatures for Proposition 139, which enshrined abortion access in the state constitution in 2024. In Congress, he has committed to codifying federal protections for abortion access.

Feely entered the race at Donald Trump’s urging after first running in a neighboring district. He has repeatedly supported defunding Planned Parenthood and backed Trump’s so-called One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which stripped health coverage from millions of Americans and put health clinics across Arizona under financial strain.
