Reproductive Freedom for All Celebrates as William Lawrence Flips Michigan’s 7th Congressional District
Detroit, MI — Today, Reproductive Freedom for All-endorsed candidate William Lawrence defeated anti-abortion extremist Rep. Tom Barrett and flipped Michigan’s 7th Congressional District.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“William Lawrence connected reproductive freedom to the kitchen-table reality of whether Michigan families can afford the care they need. Voters rejected Tom Barrett’s attempts to hide his record and sent a champion to Congress.”
Reproductive Freedom for All endorsed Lawrence in September as part of My Body. My Ballot., a $23.5 million campaign and the organization’s largest-ever midterm electoral program. To help secure this critical victory, Reproductive Freedom for All mobilized its more than 157,000 members in the state and spent five figures in ads and phonebanking to mobilize voters. In September, Mini Timmaraju joined Lawrence for a My Body. My Ballot. Rights Night to discuss reproductive freedom and the stakes for Michiganders.
Lawrence is a reproductive freedom champion and longtime community organizer who has helped local families stay in their jobs and homes. His coalition-building work in Lansing shaped a campaign focused on making health care more affordable and lowering costs.
Lawrence ran against incumbent Republican Tom Barrett, who has described himself as “100% pro-life” and voted for federal funding cuts that led to the closure of Planned Parenthood’s Lansing health center. Barrett also backed Trump’s so-called “Big Beautiful Bill,” which cuts roughly $1 trillion from Medicaid and is expected to leave thousands of his former constituents without health insurance. His record is out of step with Michigan voters, the majority of whom voted in 2022 to enshrine reproductive freedom in the state constitution.
