Reproductive Freedom for All Celebrates as Randy Villegas Flips California’s 22nd Congressional District

Washington, DC — Reproductive Freedom for All-endorsed candidate Randy Villegas has become the first Latino from the Central Valley to represent California’s 22nd Congressional District, flipping the seat with his victory over anti-abortion extremist Republican David Valadao.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“Randy Villegas understands that reproductive freedom is fundamental to whether working families can control their health, their futures, and their economic security. Central Valley voters chose a champion who will protect abortion access—and rejected David Valadao’s record of helping anti-abortion extremists take it away.”

Reproductive Freedom for All endorsed Villegas in September as part of My Body. My Ballot., a $23.5 million campaign and the organization’s largest-ever midterm electoral program. To help secure this critical victory, Reproductive Freedom for All mobilized its more than 484,000 members in the state and launched a five-figure streaming ad calling out Valadao’s extreme anti-abortion record. Mini Timmaraju also campaigned with Villegas in the final stretch of the election alongside End Citizens United, for a roundtable focused on Valadao’s corruption and disastrous health care record.

Villegas is a political science professor, school board member, community organizer, and family auto shop owner. The son of immigrants from Mexico, he grew up relying on Medicaid, SNAP, and WIC and ran to ensure Central Valley families have a greater voice in Washington. He has pledged to protect abortion access and make health care more affordable and accessible.

Valadao repeatedly voted against reproductive freedom during his time in Congress, earning a 0 percent score in Reproductive Freedom for All’s 2024 Congressional Record. He also backed federal abortion bans and “fetal personhood” legislation that could threaten IVF and some forms of contraception. Despite the 22nd Congressional district having the highest number of Medicaid recipients in the country, Valadao voted for Trump’s so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” that cut healthcare for nearly 70,000 people in the Valley.
