Even as the Trump administration relentlessly works to restrict our freedoms—attacking medication abortion, birth control, IVF, and more—we’re taking action in California.
On May 6, Reproductive Freedom for All California gathered in Sacramento for our annual Lobby Day alongside our volunteers and supporters.
We were also joined by Assemblymembers (and bill co-sponsors!) Catherine Stefani, Cecilia Aguiar-Curry and Maggy Krell, as well as Darshana Patel who set the tone for the day with remarks that grounded us in what’s actually at stake: a federal government openly hostile to reproductive freedom and a state legislature with both the power and the responsibility to hold the line.

🔍 A Closer Look: Power When We Organize Together
Showing up really makes a difference. In the weeks since we were at the Capitol for lobby day, California state legislators passed over a dozen of our reproductive freedom bills.
California continues to lead the nation in protecting and expanding reproductive freedom—and direct contact with lawmakers is what keeps the pressure on them to move bills like these forward.

🤿 Dive Deeper: What’s moving in Sacramento
During this year’s legislative session, we’ve been working to expand access to care in the face of ongoing attacks on reproductive freedom by the Trump administration.
Our co-sponsored bills would protect providers, expand access to abortion care, and strengthen access to medication abortion on community college campuses.
- ✅ AB 54 → Would shield manufacturers, distributors, and providers of medication abortion from civil, criminal, or professional liability
- ✅ AB 1973 → Would modernize California law to allow nurse practitioners, certified nurse-midwives, and physician assistants to provide abortion care to the full extent of their education, training and clinical competency
- ✅ AB 2540 → Would expand access to medication abortion on community college campuses with existing health centers
Beyond our sponsored bill package, we’re working with partners to support and advance other reproductive freedom bills—including two that would provide extradition protections for providers. We testified in support of both bills in the state legislature.
- ✅ AB 1854 → Would prohibit California law enforcement and hospitals from participating in the arrest or extradition of providers who facilitate legally protected abortion care
- ✅ AB 2164 → Would strengthen California’s shield laws by prohibiting future governors from honoring extradition requests for individuals who provide or assist with abortion or gender-affirming care that is legal in California

We need to build a strong operation now to ensure that reproductive freedom champions win in the November elections—and that anti-abortion extremist candidates don’t have a chance.
