Reproductive Freedom for All Condemns Nicole Saphier’s Anti-Abortion Record as HELP Committee Advances Her Nomination
Washington, DC — Today, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee voted to advance Nicole Saphier’s nomination to serve as U.S. Surgeon General. The nation’s top doctor is responsible for helping Americans understand critical public health issues. Saphier has repeatedly pushed anti-abortion disinformation and supports medically unnecessary restrictions on access to medication abortion.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Nicole Saphier’s anti-abortion extremism has no place in the Surgeon General’s office. Senators who voted to advance her nomination will have to answer to voters for further eroding trust in our nation’s top public health offices.”
Several Republicans facing competitive races this November voted to advance Saphier’s nomination, putting their support of MAGA’s deeply unpopular anti-abortion agenda on the record 40 days out from Election Day: Susan Collins (R-ME), Jon Husted (R-OH), Roger Marshall (R-KS), and Ashley Moody (R-FL).
During her September 16th confirmation hearing, when pressed on whether she would address the dangerous consequences of abortion bans, Saphier voiced support for the FDA’s politically motivated “study” of mifepristone and repeated anti-abortion misinformation.
Saphier’s nomination comes as the Trump administration continues to elevate anti-abortion extremists to key health positions, including Heidi Overton, who is being considered for FDA Commissioner and appeared before the HELP Committee last week for her confirmation hearing. Meanwhile, mifepristone faces ongoing political and legal attacks aimed at rolling back access nationwide.
