Reproductive Freedom Requires LGBTQ+ Liberation
We need more than “love is love”—we need health care, safety, and freedom.
⚡️ TL:DR (too long, didn’t read)
Pride is more than parades and hashtags. It’s protest. It’s resistance. And right now,it’s about fighting back against coordinated attacks on our health, our rights, and our lives.
From dehumanizing executive orders, inflammatory rhetoric, and discriminatory policies, cuts to life-saving LGBTQ+ crisis support services, and devastating Supreme Court rulings, LGBTQ+ communities—particularly those who are also Black, brown, low-income, disabled, transgender, undocumented—are under serious threat.
When it comes to Pride, we’re not just celebrating—we’re focused on the fight.
🤿 Dive into Details: LGBTQ+ and Reproductive Health Care
LGBTQ+ people already face widespread discrimination when trying to access medical care
…and it’s even worse for those who also identify as people of color, disabled, sex workers, immigrants, or those living in poverty.
- LGBTQ+ people are twice as likely to report negative experiences while seeking health care.
- Black LGBTQ+ adults (24%) and Hispanic LGBTQ+ adults (15%) report being disrespected or mistreated by medical staff.
- 70% of low-income LGBTQ+ adults have had a negative health care experience in the last 3 years.
The Attacks Are Escalating
Trump’s allies are ramping up their crusade against trans people and reproductive freedom—and using us as scapegoats to distract from their deeply unpopular agenda.
- 2024 set another record for the number of anti-trans bills introduced in Congress.
- Trump has issued a number of executive orders that actively discriminate against and harm LGBTQ+ people.
- The Supreme Court just upheld Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors which could have ripple effects on bodily autonomy for LGBTQ+ people nationwide.
- These same lawmakers are pushing abortion bans, anti-trans legislation, and Medicaid cuts—all part of the same agenda to control our bodies and our lives.
⚠️ Abortion Bans and the LGBTQ+ Community
Abortion bans and attacks on health care don’t just hurt cis women—they hurt all of us.
Many LGBTQ+ people rely on access to abortion, birth control, and fertility treatments like IVF to make decisions about their lives and families—and all of that care is under threat.
And it’s already hard enough to access care—especially for those navigating discrimination, high costs, and limited providers. Medically unnecessary barriers only push it further out of reach.
And they’re falling hardest on those who already face systemic oppression:
- LGBTQ+ people are more likely to travel out of state for abortion and reproductive care.
- 15% of Black LGBTQ+ people have had to leave their state for care (compared to just 1% of non-LGBTQ+ people).
- Disabled LGBTQ+ people are reporting new barriers since the bans—15% say they’ve had trouble keeping or finding providers.
- 36% of trans people seeking abortion care have considered managing their abortion alone out of fear of mistreatment.
🏳️🌈 The Big Picture: We Deserve to Live Freely—And Fully
Reproductive freedom and LGBTQ+ liberation are inseparable.
We’re fighting for the right to make decisions about our bodies and futures. To access abortion and IVF. To receive gender-affirming care. To be treated with dignity. To survive. To thrive.
Our fight is intersectional. Our fight is collective. And we’re not alone.
82% of LGBTQ+ people believe abortion should be legal—because we know what’s at stake when politicians try to control our bodies and our futures.
Together, we’re building a world where everyone—no matter who they are or where they live—has the freedom to make their own decisions about their bodies, their families, and their lives.
